Sonia Smit Acupuncture Ipswich

Hello! I’m Sonia Smit Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbal Practitioner. I am Nationally Registered for Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, with over 10 years experience.

I have always enjoyed having sport and physical adventure in my life. I am fortunate to be able to incorporate that interest with my healing skills. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has so much to offer our bodies for both recovery and performance at any level and at any age. I have treated small children and 92 year olds!

Early in my career as a TCM practitioner, I lived the alpine region of Victoria and treated many recovering shoulder and knee reconstructions. As well as strains, bruises and fatigue of skiers and snowboarders. I’m now in the gym and the water instead of on the snow and  I’m discovering new pains and gains of my own. As a practitioner, I use that experience as an important point of reference when treating the injuries and pain of others. But it’s not all about injuries. Chinese Medicine helps regulate many of our body’s systems and the results still impress me. Recent research is revealing how acupuncture works on the nervous system, which has a positive effect in treating pain, stress and anxiety related conditions. For further explanation you can read these articles:

Acupuncture and Herbal treatments address issues apart from pain and stress. I will be adding more information for issues such as digestion, fertility, menopause, sleep and general wellbeing. You may also find my FAQ page useful.

Academic History – Australia

I began my studies in the scientific field of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Queensland. I graduated my Bachelor of Science with Honours. After working in research for three years I travelled extensively throughout Asia. I really enjoyed experiencing the varied cultures of this area. Travel opens your eyes to new perspectives. On returning to Science research I was discouraged by the compartmentalised view and turned more to the Eastern view of the body and its interactions with the environment. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at each individual, including diet and lifestyle, with the ultimate goal of balance throughout.

Academic History – China

I was in China at the end of 2010. For 3 months I observed and practiced, to complete my studies in hospitals in Nan Chang and Guang Zhou. China is a dramatically changing place. Their traditional medicine continues to have an important role in their health and community. Modern medicine can be seen as a compliment to their traditional medicine, as apposed to the view here, that Chinese medicine is seen as a complement to modern medicine. Whichever way you look at it, I believe it’s important to realise that different medicines and therapies can and do complement each other. It is with this philosophy that I practice TCM.

TCM Qualifications

Sonia Smit Acupuncturist completed an Advanced Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine along with Certificates of TCM in China (NanChang and Guang Zhao).

My practice in Brisbane CBD is permanently closed due to COVID-19 disruptions. I am now currently available 5 days a week in Ipswich at Body Techniques, 8 Roderick St.
